PREMARITAL PREGNANCY AND THE ATTITUDE OF CHURCH PEOPLE

Anytime church people condemn a girl who got pregnant out of wedlock for being wayward and promiscuous, I flinch. The truth is the girl got pregnant because she was naive. The real promiscuous chicks don't get pregnant. They are experts at the game. They know when to do it, how to do it and with what to do it so as to avoid getting tied up. I keep asking church people to accept that there is nothing wrong with premarital pregnancy. There is only something wrong with the premarital sex that brought it. And so many are doing it. Not just the one who got pregnant. God has never condemned the child born out of wedlock...

If we mean to solve the problem promiscuity, just flogging premarital pregnancy is hardly the way to go. The more we just focus on punishing those who get pregnant, the more we challenge anyone who wants to engage in premarital sex not to stop but to be smart, to find ways to prevent the pregnancy or worse still to abort it if or when it ever happens. That way everyone remains happy and holy.

We conduct premarital tests to check for pregnancy before marriage. What does that achieve? How about conducting premarital tests to check for virginity? We claim we are no more under the law but we remain a terribly legalistic people. When they wanted to stone a woman who was caught in adultery, Jesus refused. He insisted that those not caught were also guilty. Unfortunately, in our case, we are not so discerning or, perhaps, we don't care. Once we see evidence, we jump into conclusion. Some pastors argue "Well, that's Jesus not me." I thought we were supposed to be his disciples aka followers. If we are more Spirit led, we will find that evidence can be very misleading. It can distract from main issues.

Whatever else we choose to do, I think we should be more loving and understanding when we catch people in an offence since we know that we are often lucky not to have got caught ourselves.
